I think you’re right, especially in the sense of giving the impression to the one wearing them that it somehow protects them from the virus.
Lady walks into the grocery store with gloves and a mask, grabs groceries, fresh veg, meat, cereal, etc, and goes to check out, gives the cashier money and gets cash back in return, and puts in her purse after fumbling through it with her gloves on touching her phone, keys, wallet, lip stick, etc. She then gets in her car, takes her gloves off and grabs her phone to call her husband.

100 percent right thing to do. Now we wait and hope no one who works with him/her has it and also not any customers. These are the stories that make the virus real and not media hyperbole.
