Why do you pick a thread about mass casualties of men, women, and children to troll?
I bet you would have trouble swimming 50 yards in an indoor pool.

Boss just texted me. They are all good.

We did the one in Boston and the people they hire to operate those things do not appear to be the most qualified to take those things on water. It's definitely not the most sturdy thing to take on the water.

The remaining 4 bodies have been found. Officially 17 dead.

All for the sake of a few hundred bucks. I’d love to see the SOB that decided it was a good idea to stay open yesterday.

So they had warnings all day but according to people in the area it came sooner than expected? Is that right?

Sounds like it. Hindsight is 20/20 here and I have 0 experience at Table rock lake but it seems like with any warnings like that the duck boats should avoid the water on those days.
I almost went on a duckboat in Seattle and this video makes me question whether I'd ever go on one now. That thing is not seaworthy at all.

Obviously the lake was pretty deep in that spot but the boat took awhile to sink. I'm curious how far they were from a shallow portion of the lake? This time of the summer any driver should be pretty experienced. It looks like the boat captain tried to make it back to the landing instead of simply making it back to a shallow portion of the lake?

Pic from link on page 4
The boat belonged to local company Ride the Ducks, which run tours of the area on both land and water. File image pictured. The windows were up when the boat capsized

Man, that picture leads me to believe there was some MAJOR captain error here. The time of the video and the height of the boat off the water lead me to believe they would have had ample time to get to shallow water where the boat would not have sunk. Get to 5-6 ft depth and everyone lives.
Instead the dumbass captain tried to make it back to the landing and killed everyone.
ETA: Also, I'm guessing there was major panic. The very moment they started taking on water everyone should have had life jackets on. THEN the windows should have been opened or at least made to be easily opened to evacuate.
I've been in small boats that sink plenty of times. You have a good bit of time from the OH SHITE moment you realize its sinking until you have to abandon ship. The captain F'd up that time big time.

From the local weatherman here
Showers on Table Rock can sneak up on you because of the hills, but warnings were there. I'm an hour north of Branson, but I knew there was supposed to be strong storms last night all day. No excuse for either of the Ride the Ducks boats to have been out there.

The warning was issued at 6:32 pm, and the sun was probably still shining over #TableRockLake. The gust front with 60-70 mph winds hit right at 7:00 pm, a full 15 minutes before the rain.

You need PFDs on the moment the windows are up and you're figing a storm. The moment the boat is struggling, windows must go down.
You're also following near a massive steamboat - get behind it and let it break waves a bit.

Have to wonder if that boat was having engine troubles as well... the other duck boat in the video seemed to be faring much better with the wind and waves, and made it back to safety.

From their website:

Safety is Our Priority
Yep, Ride The Ducks is a state of the art amphibian – this thing really does go from land right into the lake! Our ducks are built, exclusively for Ride The Ducks and our partners, from the ground-up. Although they only look like the WWII DUKW landing craft we are honored by that military heritage. In addition to modern safety equipment, the Ride The Ducks vehicle has patented safety features that no other DUKW-style vehicle has. So, relax and enjoy this unique experience.
quote:
The WWII DUKW is the basis for these amphibious vehicles. During WWII the DUKW was used to transport troops and supplies from water to land and back again. Today, our Ducks are authentic replicas of the DUKW, but built from the ground up under United States Coast Guard (USCG) supervision with the latest in marine safety
We are proud of our military heritage and salute our Armed Forces for the sacrifices they make for our freedom.
We have 20 Ducks in Branson.

Did you mean windows need to be open? I think those are plastic windows and actually roll up most likely?
It also looks like there was a small island behind them. Boat was certainly basically not moving. Not sure how long the boat was struggling before the video, but that island was close enough they could have run aground it looks like.
After watching the video more, it appears the captain was just keeping the boat facing the waves while probably waiting on a rescue boat.
I honestly can't believe not a single person bailed from the boat earlier, at least that we can see. I've been in plenty in too many sinking boats, but they should have known that boat was going down and jumped in with life jackets during the video.
