Different types of masks. Do some damn research.

I know I’m only preaching to the choir on here, since most who post aren’t the wacky, liberal, mask freak folks.
So I’m sanding down and re-seasoning a couple old cast iron skillets for my mom as part of her Christmas present. I wear glasses and 2 different types of face masks that are supposed to keep us safe from this deadly virus.
Long story short, I’ve been blowing out metal boogers the last several days. If these masks can’t keep out large visible metal shards, how the hell are they keeping us so safe from invisible death viruses that float through the air and cross whole continents?
Moral of the story, these pieces of thin cloth don’t do shite, and everyone thinking we should all wear them and that this is the new norm is full of shite. Mandatory masks is a load of bull. Leave your house at your own risk, and live your life as you please.
Why would you weak a mask sanding cast iron??? One of the benefits of cooking with cast iron is ingesting small amounts of cast iron when eating food prepared in cast iron...iron is necessary to live...it won't hurt you in the least.
I seasoned some cast iron skillets my dad had from my grandmother just a couple of months ago....about an hour of polishing them suckers with a scotch brite pad, a little peanut oil and in the oven at 350 for about 6 hours and they are good to go. They looked like junk when I started....I was FILTHY when I finished...but they are as good as they were when she seasoned them probably 80 years ago.
Unless you are using some sort of chemical to clean them cast iron utensils are perfectly safe to sand, grind, or otherwise make friable...iron is good for you.

Good advice. I inhale all of my supplements.

I get what you are saying but the argument is that the mask doesn't keep the virus from getting in as much as they reduce the amount of saliva everyone leaves behind thus reducing transmission.
I didn't wear one in Walmart Saturday and people looked at me like I was evil.
Short of a properly fitted self contained breathing apparatus it is not possible for any kind of mask or respirator to keep out (or in) all particulates....but if you have ever finished any sheet rock WITHOUT a clothe mask you will know that while they do not keep all of the dust out they keep out a good bit. This is the idea behind masks and viruses....nothing is going to stop it all but almost anything will stop some particles and the fewer particles the less likely someone will encounter enough of YOUR particles to get sick...it ain't like one molecule is going to infect someone, but a thousand might....and if you cut thousands down to 750 millions of times a day fewer people will be exposed. ANyone who thinks a $1 piece of cloth is going to save the world is an idiot...almost as bad as the person who thinks it can't possibly help and is merely a ploy to control them....

Think of how many metal particles that are in your lungs now because you are an idiot.
Its cast iron...its good for you. You will die without iron and get sickern dawg if you get low on it....
We breath iron into our lungs everyday....common airborne dust is full of iron...it would be impossible to live on earth if it was harmful....

I'm surprised you didn't have a sticky, nasty mess. The smoke point for peanut oil is 450°. You have to reach that smoke point for the oil to polymerise and "cure". Your oven was 100° from that point, and it didn't matter at all how long you left it in there.
Best method:
Preheat oven to 350°-400°. Put cast iron in the oven for about 30 minutes. Take it out. Bump oven to 450° (Or the smoke point of whatever oil you use, I use Grapeseed Oil). Put a small amount of oil on the cast iron while it is hot. Spread it evenly. Let it soak in for a few minutes. Wipe most of the oil off with a clean, lint free cloth. Place in 450° oven upside down to help prevent pooling of any excess oil. Set timer for 45 minutes. You will smell the oil as it smokes, but it won't be terrible. After 45 minutes, take it out and repeat the process.
Do this 3-4 or more times. On things like griddles or cornbread skillets, the more the better.
After you use a piece of cast iron and you have cleaned it, set it on a stove eye and warm it up/dry it out. While it is still hot, add just a small amount of the same oil and wipe it down. Again, wipe most of the oil away. Let it warm a bit more. Turn off the eye and set the piece off. Let cool and wipe with a dry cloth again.

It was messier than using lard or vegetable oil...had the peanut oil so I used it. I forgot about it needing to be hotter than lard or vegetable oil...I did have to wipe it out. I may wind up having to do it again....but so far so good....

This.
What you think makes red dirt red?
N95 is all you need for what you are doing, and mostly for nuisance protection like the bugger thing.
I guess you could argue the carbon is bad, but for the sake of your grinding wheels, I hope you scraped or scrubbed most of it off anyway.
For the love of God, wear a face shield. From personal experience of disks exploding and one very sucky iron filing in the eye incident. You don’t want to deal with the iron filing in the eye incident.

I had an iron or steel particle in my eye once. The only way I knew it was there was I looked in the mirror and saw something odd. I looked closer and saw a speck with an orangeish ring around it, which was a rust ring. I called the eye doc and he got me in that day. He asked how long it had been there, and I told him I didn't know. He was legit surprised that it didn't bother me. I mean, it didn't hurt, it didn't itch, it wasn't even all that red. He said he had "giant tough guys" (I was like 20 or so) come in crying like babies with it. He put numbing drops in and used the little magnet thing to get it out. The rust ring expanded further and further out until it disappeared. The whole thing was very strange.
