I have a buddy living in del rio. I am thinking about visiting him for a day and checking out Marfa for a day or two.

anyone ever been? Worth the effort driving from Houston?

Not much to do there besides the lights, which are indeed pretty cool to watch for half an hour at most.

Big Bend is a nice National Park (I've been three times), and Fort Davis has one of the premier astronomical observatories in the world, the guided tour is kinda interesting. But honestly, they're all 3-4 hours each way from Del Rio (Texas is big, duh). If I were your buddy I'd go there but even going to Del Rio from Houston is a bitch as it is.

Now if you can talk your buddy into going with you for a weekend jaunt through Big Bend, Marfa and Fort Davis, that might be a good weekend.

Drove through there on a Tuesday at 5 pm on our way to Big Bend from the Guadalupe Mountains and all but a couple of restaurants were closed. It was weird. Ate at a diner and got to listen to Phyllis dish the dirt on her old blue hair friends.

Oh, and hippies and the Prada store.

Went about 4 years ago. If you enjoy art Donald Judd has a cool installation there worth taking a look at. Also have a couple other art galleries around the city.

Worth spending the night at the Thunderbird as well.

Acuna is your answer, go to one of the bars up on the hill. Also there is a great restaurant about a half a block north of Ma Crosby's (or at least there used to be, it's been awhile since I've been down there) in a hotel.
