re: Man threatens to knock out and drown 14-year-old for fishing at a neighborhood pond

Looking at some photos of the park/pond online shows a sign saying it's a private pond owned by the club. The sign also says "No Fishing, No Swimming, No Boating".
Wonder if the 14 year old lived in the neighborhood? It's the Onion Creek golf club subdivision off I-35 in Austin. Guy was still an a-hole for how he handled it, no matter what the situation was.
This what I was thinking after reading the cops response without seemingly even interviewing the guy and seeing it was a neighborhood with a golf course.
If just felt like the cops thought the guy overreacted, but also that the kid should not have been fishing there due to rules or being private property.

What’s your point? Someone also said the old man is a Lib. A few people who look at everything through a political lens will continue to make anything political, even on the OT.

Sullivan PARK is a public park within a neighborhood
Being called a park is not a definitive answer on an area being public. After another poster said he checked the street view and saw no fishing and private property I went and saw the same thing.
If you go to the pond on Map app around 2401 Pebble Beach Drive in this neighborhood it has a sign that states Sullivan Park is owned and maintained by the HOA. It has another sign that states “Private Pond of Club” “No Fishing”, “No Boating”, and “No Swimming”. Also that the golf course is private property as well.
If the street view is out of date, and the park and pond have become public property with fishing now allowed please share where you see this change.
Thanks in advance.

The guy was being a dick, but that doesn’t make the kid innocent.

For Victoria Retana’s 14-year-old son, fishing is not just a hobby. “He lives and breathes it. It’s everything to him. So, every day he has to get his little fix of fishing. It’s like non-negotiable,” Retana said.
That is actually kinda sad and pathetic.

I’m surprised they tried to go the legal route to get accountability. She should’ve just named and shamed him in her original social media posts, assuming they know the name of the person.

This kid has been going there every day after school which likely means he has ignored being told the situation multiple times and probably has acted like a twat about it. Definitely being disrespectful to keep ignoring that’s it’s private property with a no fishing rule. This time the kid did it so he could record it while he kept his mouth shut, and the idiot gave him something. That still doesn’t mean the kid was in the right to go every day after school to private property and/or to fish where a no fishing sign is posted. It just means the guy should have handled it differently that day and even well before when kid first started doing this.
It was obvious when the cops did nothing. They didn’t even talk to the guy. This story is coming from the mom’s and kid’s POV, and it is purposely leaving out the kid’s past interactions with any adults there and that it is posted private property of an HOA along with a posted no fishing sign out in place by the owners.

It’s a public pond. Onion Creek is publicly owned and contains the pond. The only thing privately owned by the HOA is the golf course, clubhouse, and parking for golf, tennis courts. Kid was in the right.
You can check out Onion Creek Neighborhood on Google and also Austin Parks and Recreation, specifically Onion Creek Metropolitan Park.

Specifically, what past interactions are you talking about?
Our HOA has a no fishing and no swimming sign as well. Some Karen’s were complaining about kids fishing. Then, at a recent meeting, they stated it was unenforceable as the HOA does not own the land that contains the water.
Bottom line is, that pond is public land

Sullivan park with the pond is HOA. The other land near it is park of golf course or private property.
At Sullivan Park’s location I don’t see Onion Creek going thru that pond.
The kid goes there every day after school. Do you think this is the first interaction with someone over doing something that is prohibited?
Bring some links if you are correct. You started this thread so back it up. I see signs stating that Sullivan park is owned and maintained by the HOA. I see a no fishing, swimming, or boating sign which would make sense for insurance purposes for the HOA. I don’t see Onion Creek passing thru the pond at Sullivan Park.
You do know that what a HOA owns can differ from one HOA to another?? The golf club also seems to own land around or maybe also in Sullivan Park (if connected to the HOA) and has another similar pond on other side of the course.
You have offered nothing to prove this. ChatGPT is disappointing once again…

False premise. We don't know for sure that it is not public. Either way, probably the first time. Most people are not Karen's or Brad's.
By the way, reportedely the adult asked him of had a license, not if he lived there.

Yes, the pond at Sullivan Park in Austin, Texas, is a public pond.
The park itself is a City of Austin property, and the pond does not belong to any Homeowners Association or private club. As public water within a city park, it is generally accessible to the public, though general city park and state fishing regulations (if applicable) must be followed.
quote:
Here are the details on its status as a public pond:
Public ownership: Sullivan Park is an official city park managed by the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. As part of this city property, the pond and its surrounding area are accessible to the public, unlike a pond on private land or within a homeowners' association.
Recreational use: Being a public pond means it is intended for general public use and recreation. This includes activities like fishing, as indicated by a recent incident in the news concerning a teenager fishing at the pond without issue.
Subject to regulations: As with any public park, use of the pond is subject to city and state regulations. For example, individuals who wish to fish there must adhere to statefishing license requirements.
Not a private amenity: Public ponds differ from amenities found at private residences, apartment complexes, or private communities. For example, a search for "Sullivan" apartments in Austin shows amenities like pools and dog parks, but these are exclusive to residents. The pond at Sullivan Park is open to all citizens.
Public infrastructure: The pond also serves as public stormwater infrastructure, which is maintained by the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department.
quote:
Yes, Sullivan Park is located near the Onion Creek area of Austin. The park's pond is part of this community, and news reports have explicitly mentioned the location as "Sullivan Park near Onion Creek". Onion Creek is both a neighborhood and a creek that runs through the area
Are there two Sullivan's ponds near the Onion Creek area?

That is where the public pond is located. And it is also not far from the Onion Creek golf course.
I removed some stuff because:
I can see that there are two ponds, one being private (HOA) and one being public and are close to each other. Do you know which specific pond he was in? If it’s Sullivan Pond, it is public. If it is another, it’s probably the private one. The news said Sullivan Pond. That’s really what it boils down to in this public versus private pond debate as it pertains to the kid who was innocently fishing.
