He went to Hahnville for his Freshman and Sophomore year, LSMSA his junior and senior year. I graduated from LSMSA with him in 2006.

Any idea what happened with him? Was he a weird guy? Drugs?

Weird - yes. But we were all weird at LSMSA. I wouldn't have said he was any weirder than anyone else there, though some of my classmates have disagreed with me and described him as unstable as we've talked about it the past few days. If he was, it definitely wasn't to a level that was disturbing, at least to me. Drugs, also yes, but again, it wasn't uncommon there. He did go beyond just the normal recreational pot though. Dabbled in Crystal Meth, among other things, but AFAIK that didn't turn into any kind of addiction or anything. He had a handful of really close friends, but wasn't very social in general. Mostly kept to his dorm room except for class and meals, and even meals he preferred to get delivery to the dorms and eat in his room.

Honestly, and I hope I don't regret admitting this, he was a good friend of mine back then. We ended up going to different schools, but I'm from the Baton Rouge area so when I would come home to visit my family I would occasionally visit him as well. Last time I spoke to him was over 9 years ago... we would have both been sophomores in college the last time we spoke. He was arrested from the same apartment complex he lived in back then. He wasn't nice or compassionate, but I never once got an evil or deranged vibe. He had an assholish, derisive sense of humor. He was smart and clever (but definitely not charming), and most of the time even if you were the target of his jokes you couldn't help but laugh.

I cannot imagine what happened to him in the years since we last spoke that could have led to this. I have no sympathy or pity for him, and whatever happens to him next, he deserves it, but I can't help but feel like the guy I thought I knew died with his parents.

Thank you for the honesty.

It really is. Everything I read about him... reclusive... not social with his neighbors... student at LSU wanting to be a plastic surgeon... parents paying for everything... all of those things were true the last time I spoke of him. I would have predicted a very successful life for him before all of this. Apparently he was just stagnating, leeching off his parents, and going crazy.

I didn't go to LSU. And I would have only seen him during summer and on weekends... so I never would have seen him go to class or anything, but he moved to Baton Rouge to go to LSU, and there was no reason for me to doubt that's what he was doing. I'm trying to remember if I ever saw textbooks or anything at his place and I just can't. He actually didn't start at LSU. Spent his first semester at George Washington University before transfering to LSU for reasons I don't think he ever told the truth about (grades or parents didn't want to pay, I would guess). He used to have pictures on social media from his time at GWU, but after that he stopped posting pretty much ever on social media, and now everything but his profile picture, which is his dog, are deleted.

He always had a big nose. We made fun of him for it. He did not alway look that unstable. He was actually gay, and spent a lot of time on his appearance back then. He was much skinnier back then too, but still didn't have much of a neck.

Won't take long for him to be bitched out in jail.

All he'll need a pair of high heels knee pads.

Did he change majors a few times? Most Med schools usually frown on the 10 yr undergrad plan

A long post from his sister on facebook. Here is a snippet:

The worst part about this horrific crime is that we are just getting started and true justice can never be found, but there is the death penalty in Tennessee! My only wish is that the death penalty matched the crime! To the lawyer that makes the choice to represent Joel Guy, Jr, if by a slim, slim chance you work to free Joel, I do hope that Joel does not show his appreciation to you and your family the same way he did to the 2 people that loved him with their whole heart!

Wonder if his parents supported him on that. Good thing he didn't decide to shoot up LSU.

At least when I knew him his parents didn't know he was gay, and I never got the impression they talked about things like that. I didn't know his parents, only meeting them very briefly at our graduation, so I don't know what their thoughts in general were on homosexuality, but if he kept it from them I guess he felt they wouldn't be ok with it.

The last time I spoke to him he had not changed majors at all in college, but for him to be in school at 28 I have no idea what was going on. If you would have told me that before all of this, I would have thought he was in grad school or going back for another bachelor's degree, which I guess could still be the case.
