DPTB doesn't put knives in the dishwasher either. Washes and puts back in block. I bought my own knives that I put in the dishwasher 
To be fair he cuts most things for me to cook. He is quite a prep/sous chef.

I always have a high-end knife in my pocket. Requests to borrow them are always denied. They're not screwdrivers or any other type of utility tool. Most people have zero idea of how to handle a fine blade.
