So they are employees now or students with a first amendment right?

They're students with a first amendment right. But as student-athletes, they're representatives of the university...especially when wearing LSU gear or uniforms.

It's pretty fricking simple. The athletic department is asking them not to wear LSU gear when talking about Alton Sterling so that whatever their personal opinion is doesn't get misconstrued as being representative of LSU athletics as a whole.

LSU is trying to avoid negative PR backlash from either side if an athlete goes on camera and says something in support of Sterling or in support of the officers. No matter what side the athlete takes, half the people won't agree with them. So LSU wants them to avoid being in LSU gear so that it puts off the impression that this is the athlete's personal feelings on the matter and doesn't represent the opinion of the university or athletic department.

So basically LSU chose a side and it may not be sympathic to the players ...

LSU athletics is more than basketball and football and the memo went out to ALL athletes, not just certain sports. While I'd think the majority of basketball and football players would be more likely to side with Alton Sterling supporters, I think the opposite would be true for a lot of other sports like baseball, softball, golf, swimming, and gymnastics. The athletic department doesn't want to be associated with taking EITHER side, so they ask for athletes not to wear LSU gear to avoid perception of taking sides.

Not even close. LSU is taking a step back and letting players voice their opinions. But don't use your status as an athlete or LSU as your platform to project those beliefs.

We have enough of that from Pro Athletes and Celebs.

Universities controlling all aspects of media communication is nothing new.

You've just demonstrated a major problem in a nutshell.

By them choosing to stay out of it, you assume that they chose the side against Sterling.

That's a fricking problem with these people. If you're not next to them screaming in the streets, you're a racist bigot devil.

You never let me down with your objectiveness SS.

Speaking as a former LSU athlete, no they cannot. They have an agreement to represent the university and wearing these items while speaking on this topic may be construed as LSU supporting said statements. You're wrong on this one.

I dont think you understand the message what so ever that LSU is trying to convey to their athletes.

You are assuming that LSU as a whole is happy with this decision, the university. Which in no way did that statement say that.

LSU is being proactive here just like any employer or institution should be. LSU is a university that has supporters from all back grounds and all races and all cultures and Im sure the LSU fans/Supporters out there have differing opinions on this situation.

So, by LSU asking their athletes not to wear LSU gear they are asking them not to go out there as an LSU Spokesman.....they are not an lsu spokesman or spokes person to help your snowflake mind out.

This is clearly the right move so that a public opinion made by one of their players in LSU gear is taken as a statement from the university, which it wouldnt be.

The fact that you are not looking at this objectively makes you look foolish and you're opinion shite.
