Very true in some aspects, but in other aspects, there are a lot of issues with race that this country should confront (many of which can be seen in this thread). I think there is a better way to have the dialogue than the way BLM is acting. Yet political discourse in this country is at a low in a number of areas.

Slavery was practiced all over the world, yet the US is the only one still stuck in the past and trying to fix/erase history. The rest of the world has moved on, why can't we?

well it needs to start with both sides being honest. A higher percentage of black people are racist than whites

That is purely anecdotal and also completely irrelevant. Both sides have issues they need to fix, stop trying to make this about who is worse.

This. And if we are going to take that route I can easily say the black racism is only a reaction to white racism.

I completely disagree.

So blacks are racist and whites are perfect angels?

In my opinion, Americas problems today are more related to Jim Crow than the practice of slavery (not to minimize that tragedy).

Nah. Racism is a universal human flaw.

And yet we need more prison space because there are all manner of violent people still wandering this state's streets.

We're talking about drug arrests. People desperate after decades of targeted arrests and disenfranchisement. Have at least a modicum of compassion for your fellow man

It is a lot easier to just keep locking more people up and ignoring the issue than to actually take a hard look at yourself and admit that you have a problem.

Most dealers have jobs.

Anti-drug policies and laws have had “no measurable impact on supply or use” and cannot be justified on scientific or public health grounds, according to the authors of study commissioned by the Johns Hopkins university and The Lancet.
Dr Chris Beyrer, from Johns Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health, said prohibition was the basis for many national drug laws - “policies based on ideas about drug use and dependence that are not scientifically grounded”.
“The global 'war on drugs' has harmed public health, human rights and development,” he said.

There are few truly nonviolent offenders in state prison. If you dig beyond the instant offense or even look at what was reduced or dropped as part of a plea deal, you will find a violent personal history.

Louisiana is fricked up, period. Multiply that times 10, and we still wouldn't scratch the surface.

Once again the issue is that exposure to the criminal justice system does not actually have the deterrent effect we once thought it did. In fact, spending even a small amount time in jail for possession tends to lead to more criminal behavior for a number of reasons. So you are, in part, correct. Most people in jail are not there for drugs alone, but drug charges do tend to create a cycle of criminality that ends in more violent crime.

Louisiana is a sad state overall. Katrina made it worse imo. I say the people that are doing life or are on death row should be dropped off in an Isis stronghold and let them blow people away.
