Los Angeles trip

Going to LA for 16 days in early November for work. Most of it can be done of of the house but I will have some appointments to go to in Santa Monica twice a week. Any suggestions on areas to stay in? Wife and kids (8 & 5) will be coming so they'll be doing the sightseeing thing the whole time. My thoughts were either Venice or Hollywood. We will have a car.

Just a couple of heads up...
The Hollywood blvd area is filthy and sketchy. There are a few sites to be seen but I wouldn't recommend making it a centerpiece of your trip.
Don't waste your time on the Santa monica pier at all. It's lame and packed with wannabe gangbangers.
Nothing cool at all there,, although Santa monica is great as a whole
