I'm looking at the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 for $299 on Amazon. Looks like a good starter unit.

Many possible applications. But it looks like I'll have to wait because their Gimbal only fits Canon (I'm a Nikon head; D800). Max take-off weight: 21 pounds

It specs out at 15 minutes flying time on one set of batteries. That might not sound like much, but that's a ton of video footage. The natural remedy would be to get extra batteries, but they are pricey.
