My husband likes it. The toffee is pretty good.

Trust me...it's an improvement over some previous past Christmas gifts from his parents.

I mean Swiss Colony is much better than this....

B needs to grow a pair and recommend a LL Bean or something similar gift card, so you can get something you both need and enjoy.

I'm not married to you and I know you would prefer some decent hiking boots or Adirondack jacket to a meat stick and cheese.

I'm really not that worried about it. I'm just thankful it was a good day today(his parents have been moody lately so I was a lil nervous about how today would play out).

His dad beat cancer last year, that's gift enough for us.

That is good. But they could still be more thoughtful.

That's just his parents. They are hit or miss with the gifts. Some years they nail it perfectly(last year they gave me earrings I really loved...for our wedding they gave us $400 in REI gift cards among other stuff). Other years....see piano mat above.

School has been keeping me busy so I haven't been hiking like I normally would

That's awesome. Unfortunately my aunt is losing the battle to cancer. This was her last Christmas barring a miracle, as much as it pains me to say it. So hard to see someone you love just die a little more each time you see them. 2016 is likely going to be a really rough year. Her and a couple of my grandparents are just succumbing to old age.

Those are easier to take with it being the natural order of things but it's still hard.

All of my grandparents have passed away.

My aunt died of lung cancer(longtime smoker). Last time I saw her alive was one of the times I was in LA visiting family. I knew visiting her it would be the last time I saw her. She just looked so tiny and frail and weak when I saw her, was just so sad.

The kicker....her husband and 2 of her sisters watched her die a horrible death from lung cancer.....and they still smoke. I just don't understand it.

I bet you a dollar they give B his own secret Santa gift and make him promise not to tell you about it, which eagerly agrees to.

Right there with you. Currently in the ICU with my dad who's been fighting a losing battle with cancer. Pains me to say that today was probably his last Christmas with us.

As much as it hurts to see them in pain and losing their quality of life...at least you get a little time to make your peace. You get to tell them that you love them and share those moments.

I lost my grandfather, great uncle and brother with no time to say goodbye. No time to tell them what they meant to me. Just blank pages. Too many blank pages.

And I know that maybe, hopefully, some part of them is still out there. That not all ties are severed. That strands remain.

Every so often, in dreams, that place between death and awake, I see him. I talk with him. Laugh with him. And then I wake up and it's gone, bittersweet and never long enough. And aside from that there's just a cold grey stone and memories.
