It's a common term and understood by most.
Whose expectations? Yours? The servers? It's an illogical term within these contexts. I can understand when you accidentally tipped more than you wanted to, that would be considered overtipping, and if he generally does that then he is stupid.

Social expectations in this country are 15%-20% for full service. If you are tipping over this then you are overtipping beyond what is expected of you. This is considered generous. If you are tipping below this you are not meeting your social expecations, and you are considered cheap. This is obvious.

Find me that rule and I'll agree with you, otherwise I stand by my assertion that there is no maximum tip you can give someone. It's service and customer dependent. I'll give you that there is a minimum but no maximum.
Also weren't you the one who tried to act superficial in the Willy Wonka thread but were proved wrong?

If they bring me my food but I paid at the register in advance and I throw my own trash away, I'll tip if I a buck or two in cash. I generally don't carry cash. So, no tip for the most part. If I pay after, I'll tip via card and let them clean up.

The real question here is, how much do the waiters/waitresses make hourly.
Typical full service restaurants pay their front of the house employees $2.13/ hour. So, they are able to make $10-15/ hour. Some professionals in New Orleans can make up to $25/hr on some nights.
It doesn't sound like you're talking about an establishment like Emeril's. But the question is still; how much are they making?
Throw three or four bucks on the table if it was just you. Multiply it by how many people in your party if not.
