So apparently the new leave act that allows parents to take leave from work and get benefits if they have someone to care for at home, including children not in school, excluded healthcare workers. Wtf is up with that? Are we supposed to let the magic healthcare fairy stay at home and teach our kids so we can go to work? Anyone know any other options?

Kids are school age and my wife has to spend the day teaching them the lesson plans that the school gives them every week. Daycares going to do that?

Can't answer your inquiry but aren't these folks just doing their jobs. Why the favored status? Occupational risk, if not C19 it will be something else - goes with the territory

Btw, there are “non essential” healthcare workers out there. She’s not a nurse.

Correct. What would happen to the staffing of a medical facility if everyone just went home for 14 days?

Because a bunch of hospitals in areas with a lot of cases are already struggling with staffing shortages. Letting them take leave right now would just exacerbate the staffing shortage problems big time.

FMLA applies to all public agencies, all public and private elementary and secondary schools, and companies with 50 or more employees. These employers must provide an eligible employee with up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave each year for any of the following reasons:

For the birth and care of the newborn child of an employee;

For placement with the employee of a child for adoption or foster care;

To care for an immediate family member (i.e., spouse, child, or parent) with a serious health condition; or

To take medical leave when the employee is unable to work because of a serious health condition.

It also excludes companies that employ over 500 people.

I can understand the healthcare worker exemption, but I can't find a reason, besides big money making the rules, to exempt companies that should be in the best position to absorb the hit.

That has been changed for this Coronavirus event. It has been expanded and includes people that have to stay home to take care of children that can’t go to school because they shut it down. It has nothing to do with not wanting to work.

Regular FMLA- yes. Not the FMLA Expansion for this situation.

It excludes FD and PD workers, also, but they’re not on TD bitching.
