That sounds particularly sketchy. I don't do dabs in front of people that don't smoke. It just looks terrible. I recommend a nectar collector.
You just heat the nail, and dip it into a small Silicon or glass cup. It give you better control on your dab size. I pretty much only use pens in pubic.

It looks pretty much identical to an oil cartridge.
Just stay away from o-pen. It's a big company, but very mediocre quality. Wax and shatter her much better flavor.

Use the torch to heat up the titanium nail. Then press the wax to the nail.

That's the smartest way. Too many dabs fricks up your tolerance, and makes you dumb. I bought my first shatter right before a week long blizzard. Did only dabs for a week. I decided to smoke a joint, and rolled up a monster 2 gram joint in a king sized paper, and I barely got a buzz.
Even though I have a bunch at the house, I haven't done a dab in weeks.
