LAST CONFEDERATE WIDOW DIED 2008

Maudie Hopkins (December 7, 1914 – August 17, 2008) was an American woman believed to be the last publicly known surviving widow of a Civil War veteran.

Born as Maudie Cecilia Acklin in Baxter County, Arkansas, she married William M. Cantrell (aged 86) on February 2, 1934, when she was 19.

He may have been the little drummer boy.

He was a drummer for a Minnesota Regt that saw only garrison duty at the end stages of the war. His father, however, was killed at Shiloh in April 1862

Many very young women married elderly Civil War veterans during the depression era for the sole reason of banking those govt pension checks. What is REALLY crazy is that some of those old baws were able to have children in their 70's and 80's and as of today there are at least 3-5 (maybe more) genuine sons and daughters of Civil War veterans STILL alive.

Lemuel Cook (September 10, 1759 – May 20, 1866) was one of the last verifiable surviving veterans of the American Revolutionary War. He lived to see the country that he fought to create split apart in the American Civil War.
Wow.

Lived to be over 106 years old when the life expectancy of males was probably 50.

My great uncle is still kicking. Joined the army somehow at age 16 in 1944--fought in WW2, Korea, Vietnam, and was an advisor all the way through Desert Storm.
Jesus, that man is a true warrior and patriot.

May God bless him for his service, sacrifice and dedication to our country.

it was not an unknown practice, especially in the Appalachians, for families to marry off girls to CW vets so as to get pensions, insurance, etc...

I have an in-law who is a Bataan survivor. 4th Marine Division.

Worked as a POW in a Japanese copper mine until the end of the war.

He made 97 earlier this year, probably won't make 98.

Still lucid. Tough, tough man.
