I was doing a search for something else and came across this site. What a delight! I grew up in Lake Charles but moved to California alsmot 30 years ago.

Even back then Lake Charles was a very bleak place to grow up. Not much for a child or teenager to do as I remember. I haven't been back since the early 80s. I do remember some shops I used to frequent. I think most were in downtown LC. I wonder if they are still in business.

Muller's Department Store
The Fashion (upscale womens wear)
Riff's (upscale womens wear and a great shoe dept.)
Stander's (children's clothing)
Love's (menswear)
Pete's Gifts (where all of the brides registered)
Navarra's Jewelery

I remember seeing movies at the Paramount and Lyric theaters. There was also one called The Pitt but it was nicknamed "The Pitts" because it was a dump.

There was a fancy french restaurant on Lake Street by the tennis club but I can't remember the name.
They built a shopping mall while I was there but it wasn't much of a mall.

Oh, and of course Borden's Ice Cream store.

i think navarra's is the only one still in business

Is Harris's Restaurant in Hayes still any good?

After Harris sold it to his brother, it went downhill. His brother recently died of a some type of heart disease. The restaurant is now owned by a cousin who has rejuvinated the place. Music, food and atmosphere are outstanding and worth the short trip from LC

On a different note...anyone remember that ice cream stand on east prien lake rd next to the old builders save more place?

Skating at Pelican and then later at McBride's

highway 14

Hwy 14. Was that the street that ran east of Oak Park? If so, that was cess pool back in 70s? Is it still the same, better, worse?

What about Oak Park? I grew up there. It was quite a fashionable area back then.

Well, Oak Park Blvd runs East-West and Hwy 14 is east of the Oak Park Subdivision. The schools have turned over and much of the subdivision has.

Yes, you are correct. I meant to write "east".

PAPANIA'S -- Man, I miss that place. Used to bartend at OB's and after we'd close the place down we'd go to Papania's and have the Dutch Steak, which was stuffed with cheese. Good stuff, especially at 4:00 in the morning. Jimmy Smith playing the music!

I left LC 35 years ago in 1973, never moved back. It's true it was a dull place, but we have so much more to compare it to now than we had back then. Seems I remember the Bamboo Club being the most popular dance place back in the 60's .. that was on Hwy 14. I got a lot of enjoyment out of hunting and fishing around LC in my youth, I'm glad I had that.

There are things I miss about my old hometown, but not enough to have brought me back. Geez back then all we had was antena TV, got local and I think Orange or Beaumont, TX .. and Lafayette .. not much else.
