72-hrs in Louisiana...but at the Psyist's discretion...Or maybe under Coroner's hold they have 72 hrs to evaluate and either release or commit for 14 days.
It is legal, when you are perceived as a threat to yourself or others. All it takes is a phone call, and the caller willing to put in writing that THEY are the one that put you there. Can be a co-worker, family member...

It's been hard to piece the story together on account I'm getting it from my wife--and she's not easy to understand even under the best of circumstances.
So you're married to a chick you can't understand? What the frick?

They would have only taken her if at some point she may have stated she was going to harm herself.
I hear what you're saying but I don't think it always works like that - at least from what I've heard. Have a friend who worked in a psyche ward and she told me how frequently it happens - nervous breakdowns, drug overdose, threats of suicide, etc, etc, etc. Some instances I've heard stories of were questionable but it seems to have worked out OK in the end.

The doc asked me if I thought she would "do harm to herself."
I said, "Absolutely 100% no. The only person she wants to harm is me. But I've secured all the steak knives and scissors, plus the chainsaw, so there shouldn't be any problem."
They released her to me that afternoon.

Actually, for reasons I stated in other posts, I believe she was taken to the mental health center--well, in error, due to insufficient knowledge and comprehension of her monumentally bizarre psyche.

As I said though, it's a shame I wasn't there when all this happened. Then I could have explained to the authorities that her behavior, so disturbing to them, was actually quite normal, that is, within her range of behaviors. And who better to know this than me, her husband.
You've said this a couple of times, but I think if you were there to tell them this is her normal, that would have potentially made things much worse.
