Took my kid to get her adenoids and tonsils taken out. Didn't have a night terror ever again.

Apparently I got them when I was a kid at least that's what I'm told but the funny thing Is I don't remember anything but waking up wondering why I was out of bed and being completely confused as to what was going on ....

One time I remember coming to and I was sitting on the toilet , my dad comes in the bathroom with his belt in his hand saying here you go as he was trying to hand it to me , I was confused and asked what he was doing , he said I don't know you were running around the house screaming give me your belt ....

Crazy shite I couldn't have been maybe 5 , good thing that never happened with my kids , probably a horrible experience.....

I'm going to try the Capri sun suggestion but I know that will be hard because we have tried to get her to drink milk before but she just fights us.

We actually tried milk first and had no luck with it. Keep us updated and just know that this is something that will pass, it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with your daughter and it doesn't hurt them at all long term. We both know how horrible it is while it happens but always remember in the grand scheme of things it's less than an hour a month at worst.

she went into a spare room, slammed the door and physically tried to hold the door shut so we couldn't come in.

Am I reading this right? Y'all can't push through a door a 2 year old is holding closed? Holy shite. Call a priest.

I know how it sounds but if you had seen one you would seriously consider calling a priest because it is like the child is possessed. Honestly The Exorcist movie is exactly what it is like, minus the devil talk, but you just can't believe what it is like until you have seen it and the strength they get is like when you hear about a 100lb woman lifting a car to save her kid up to save her kid who is trapped under it. The sheer terror the kids experience is so horrible that even in todays fricked up society even the most fricked up person wouldn't even think to grab a phone and film it.....and that really should tell you something about how disturbing they are because a video of a legit night terror would get 10 million views the first day it was up. I feel so anxious just typing about it because it is so unreal, I pray you never have to see a kid have one.

They sent me to a psychologist in the seventies where I learned biofeedback techniques in the hope I could take control of the dreams.

I did.

This led to my teen years where I would have hypnogogic hallucinations and absolutely no understanding of what they were. What I was seeing or experiencing in the dream would follow me out and be as real as if I'd been awake for ten hours. There's no difference to the brain.

So I've 'seen things' like old women and demons and rats and snakes and gorillas and you name it while I'm awake right as I'm going in, or more likely lately, coming out of sleep. Ghosts? lol. Totally get it. But I'm trained to realize when I'm awake and I'm now seeing something that absurd, I instantly label it as a hallucination and POOF! It's gone. The adrenaline takes a bit longer.

This is, if I'm honest about it, the primary reason I got a psych degree.

So the lesson here is... Get your kid some modern therapy because damn near anything is better than a psych degree

OP don't listen to this garbage post, it is just going to freak you out and its BS. Your child will be fine and it will last a couple of years at most. It has nothing to do with what they watch on TV or shite they have gone through in their lives, it is just a thing some kids get for awhile and they will outgrow it.

Is there a pattern to it? My three year old only has them when she doesn't take a nap during the day.

We had this same issue, they weren't as intense as what was described in the OP but probably 4-5 times while she was transitioning to not taking a nap we had these episodes.

This may be a wives tale but someone told us that sometimes it can be brought on when they have to go to the bathroom. Could be a total coincidence but the next couple of times she woke up and we could tell it was starting we put her on the toilet and she went and it ended immediately or much quicker.

After that we started making sure she went every night before going to sleep and she hasn't had any issues since.

Good luck.

does your child snore?

Does she fall asleep easily during the day, for instance on short car rides?

Does she get up multiple times when first putting her down to sleep?

Does she claim that she fell asleep but had a bad nightmare only seconds after putting her down?

Is she low on the weight and height curve for her age?

Does she often seem to switch between happy and very angry with little provocation?

Is she hard to wake up in the mornings?

Seriously there are some great stories and experiences in this thread and even some that have touched on a very real very treatable cause of night terrors which does have serious health consequences left untreated.
