Actually, it was a pagan belief that predated Christianity.
Big reason they tried to beat it out of you in the old days was you had to dip your ink in the inkwell which was on the right side of the desk. So if you were left-handed you'd drip ink coming the whole way across.

My kindergarten teacher forced me to write right handed even tho I'm a lefty, I eventually switched back around 8th grade
