I don't want someone updating me on a project....if you have questions or problems....ask, otherwise go get it done! Honestly I would perceive someone updating me on a project and telling me what they were doing as a lack of confidence or not being sure about their work....or trying to pat themselves on the back....meanwhile they are updating their fantasy rosters...I'd probably watch them even closer.
If you are issued a project or a task, let your body of work and efficiency speak for itself...go to him when you are ready for another project!

Is it to your personal benefit or not? Never give them any information that can be used against you.

If you are dependable and know what you are doing then you do whatever you are assigned to then when its done let them know. At some point if the boss wants to know where things are with something then let them know, but it seems kind of juvenile.
"okay boss, I just finished the first step now I am going to ___ _________ ______ __ then after that I will be able to ______________ _____ ________ ___, but don't worry I will let you know before I start that part".
