I live in the northland KC. (Liberty). You can still buy land within an hour of KC if you go north. Smithville, Kearney, excelsior Springs areas. Lees Summit is also a good area. Head east towards Lone Jack. Nice houses out there, but still rural. KC metro is really spread out. A good interstate system circles it though.

Overland Park on the Kansas side of Kc and Lee’s Summit or Grain Valley (has a bit of a country feel) on the MO side of KC.
