About the same thing happened to me. Growing up I'd watch my dad cut off a chunk of chewing tobacco and chew it while fishing. He only chewed when we were fishing. Well, 30 years later I'm going fishing with a buddy and I decide to be like my dad. So I bought me a rectangle block of chewing tobacco.
Went fishing, cut me off a big ole piece and laid
in the boat 30 minutes and felt like I had turned green.

You gotta be careful how big a piece you cut off. That stuff will expand in your mouth.(TWSS)
