Texas has had that law for years.

There is nothing that makes me angrier in traffic than someone speeding through a school zone. My little boy likes to watch traffic on a two lane right outside of our neighborhood and wave at trucks that go by, it is frightening to see how many people go by with their face buried in a cell phone

Florida or our county passed a law you can’t use a mobile device in a school zone or something like that. I can’t remember.

The law in Louisiana is you can’t use a handheld phone in a school zone.

Because apparently holding a phone makes a difference and is worse than talking over a bluetooth speaker system.

It’s the fact you’re distracted while talking on the phone. Holding it doesn’t make a difference.

So, you don't think the handheld phone law has more to do with them texting and less to do with them talking?

It’s already illegal to text and drive everywhere.

The law in school zones is about holding the phone while talking on it. They write tickets for that and it’s what they discussed when passing the law.

If you can't talk through the bluetooth system and drive at the same time, you shouldn't drive at all.

The problem with people holding a device, is people will drive and text/look at instagram/facebook/etc. They look like this when driving (I see it all the time):

Literally no difference in holding the phone to your ear. But one is illegal and he other isn’t.

I would think it actually is worse than talking over the Bluetooth

Read a study this week saying pedestrian accidents go up 180% from Oct to Nov. This was mainly due to less light in the mornings after the time change. Be careful out there and pay attention.

Yes there is. You're going to have to take your eyes off of the road for longer to look at your phone to see who is calling and answer it

It's not talking on a phone call that is the problem. It's using your phone to look at shite that is the problem. Like I said, not just looking at it, but gazing into the screen like you're sitting at your desk.

I see it ALL THE frickING TIME. It's a problem.

You don’t look to see who’s calling over your speaker system?

I do, but it's quicker to look at the speaker than to pick up the phone and look or look down at the phone in my lap or on the console.

Tell that to the idiots who pass our laws. They passed them specifically because they think holding the phone to your ear is the issue here.

I press a button on the same display that I would use to change the radio station.

Let me put it this way, if you can't use a bluetooth system as a means of talking on the phone, then never talk to anyone in the car nor use your radio. Because those two actions are the same thing.

So you think talking on Bluetooth is not a distraction? People get so engrossed in their conversations that they pay no attention to their surroundings. Bluetooth might take the manual distraction of holding the phone away but it does nothing for the cognitive distraction. Don’t fool yourself.

It's not, and it shouldn't be. When you're in a car with others, do you just sit there in complete silence? Or do you have a conversation with them?

I mean come on, there's a way to talk with somebody and not get "so engrossed" in a conversation where it's distracting.

If you can't talk on a phone call with the bluetooth system and pay attention/drive at the same time, you need to stop driving.
