The Lancaster was originally selected to carry the atomic bombs to Japan. It was the only WW2 bomber that could carry Little Boy or Fat Man without extensive modifications.

They had to spend millions to basically redesign the B-29 to carry bombs that large (silver plate conversion).

When it came to the decision, politics overrode engineering and finances. No way we were gonna have British crews flying a British bomber to deliver the coup de grace to the Japs.

The Lancasters were crewed and trained and ready to go. But the B-29s got the call in the end.

Nice picture. And I'm sured the engines have been overhauled many times. And speaking of Rolls Royce they shut one of their airplane parts plants today.

Absolutely gorgeous pic. The Lancaster is often overshadowed by its American counterparts.

The Brits built some awesome warbirds. The Vulcan is my favorite airplane of all time.

I saw one at Barkesdale in Bossier. That was in the 70s and got pilots autograph (Jonathan Tipp) and he was a nice guy. Of course I was like 10. All pilots were cool to me.

That Vulcan sounded so incredible.
