A Florida man trying to reach Bermuda, Haiti, Cuba and Puerto Rico in a giant inflatable bubble was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard over the weekend. Coast Guard Petty Officer Mark Barney said long-distance runner Reza Baluchi was picked up Sunday off Florida and his "hydropod" was being towed to shore. Baluchi agreed to be voluntarily rescued.

The Coast Guard tweeted Sunday that Baluchi’s voyage had ended “after he violated a USCG order not to embark on his seagoing journey.” The contraption, years in the making, includes 36 buoyancy balls on each side, a life jacket with a water filter, a GPS tracking device and even shark repellent.

people like this dying would be an example to others to not try this stupid stuff and waste our resources saving you. I hope he gets a nice bill for that. I was in a car wreck a few years ago, didnt even need an ambulance or fire truck, they both came and I got a big bill for both.

Baluchi set out from Pompano Beach on Saturday, despite receiving an April 15 letter from the Coast Guard warning him not to depart, according to Barney.
The Coast Guard said it had reviewed Baluchi's plan and determined it to be unsafe. The first leg alone was about 1,033 miles.
First leg was jogging 1,033 miles.
Sounds solid.

I'd think about going across my own pool in one.

I posted last week brah. My fave quote was from his first attempt when people reported a man near the beach in a bubble asking for directions to the Bahamas.

He tried to make a similar journey in 2014 and had to be rescued about 70 nautical miles east of St. Augustine.
What a puss...

He could sit there and do nothing and the currents would take him that way regardless, albeit not in a timely fashion. Not sure what his plan for food was.
On a related note, does the USCG charge him for these rescues? They should.

no you didn't
if you were transported by the ambo, well then frick yeah you got a bill. But you didn't get a bill from the FD and you didn't get a bill for them just showing up

when I lived in FL a few years back some guy missed the departure of a cruise ship that either family or friends were on, he took off, at night, on a jetski to try and find the ship, as far as I know neither he nor his jetski has ever been seen since
