He didn’t grant authority to the Catholic Church. He granted authority to the apostles, and an apostle is one who was given that authority and title as one receiving it personally from Christ Himself. There are no more apostles, not matter what anyone wants to call themselves these days. The last apostle was Paul, and He received that from Christ on the road to Damascus.
