Is there much better than laying awake listening to the ocean at night?

Hearing the endless waves crashing upon the shore.
A cosmic lullaby to the sand, a million mountains ground down to but motes between your toes?

That feeling that things do go on,
far beyond you, far behind you, far ahead of you.

Waves crash endlessly.
A dirge to those honored dead. A lullaby to the living. An anthem to the born.

By the gods there's a secret to the sea set against the eye of the sleepless moon.

We're only a passing fashion.

That eye has seen the ancestors of our ancestors of our ancestors come before us, bearing the same haughty thoughts.

They became the same as we'll be, or would be. But it's really all the same. We beat the same, hear the same, once the din of the modern world we live in drifts away.

Once the batteries die.
We all lie upon the sand.
And hear the same waves.

Sea eating shore until shore is no more but the chore is sure forevermore.

The sound that our ancestors heard is the same as we hear in our ears; we're scant different inside. Hearing the same wondrous sounds upon grounds which have drawn endless souls into the sea.

TL;DR

I hear you. I appreciate the thread. Listening to the sea while relaxing at night is very calming. For me, I love to hear a chorus of tree frogs singing at night, especially after a good rain shower.

It's not quite night.
Pinpricks of light in the eastern sky.
Above my neighbor's roof, a transparent
moon, a pink rag of cloud.
Inside my house are those who love me.
My daughter dusts biscuit dough.
And there's a woman, I will lift her hair
in my hands, brush it
until it throws sparks.
Everything is just as I've left it.
Dinner simmers on the stove.
Glass bowls wait to be filled
with gold broth. Sprigs of parsley
on the cutting board.
I want to smell this rich soup, the air
around me going dark, as stars press
their simple shapes into the sky.
I want to stay on the back porch
while the world tilts
toward sleep, until what I love
misses me, and calls me in.

Lying in bed with the radio on
Moonlight falls like rain
Soft summer nights spent thinking of you
When will I see you again

Soft and low the music moans
I can't stop thinking about you
Thinking about you

I didn't know it would be so strong
Waiting and wondering about you
I didn't know it would last so long
Nights are forever without you

Curtains still dance with the wind and the sky
The sun will be coming up soon
But I just can't sleep for thinking of you
Here alone with the blues

Soft and low the music moans
I can't stop thinking about you
Thinking about you

I didn't know it would be so strong
Waiting and wondering about you
I didn't know it would last so long
Nights are forever without you

What kind of f@g shite is that,
You queer? But a whisper'ng to,
A won'drous ear. To the end,
It's a sin, to rescind, what the pale moon cries.

It's so clear, that the queer,
Sight of turgid skies,
Brings some pain, to the brain,
Of an old man's eyes,
A blood moon, was a boon,
To the mood that flies,
Upon gossamer glass that lasts 'til
The horiz-
On breaks and the drunkeness
Shakes from my eyes.
