It makes sense if one person has a different firmness preference, but today they make mattresses you can adjust for that. Would still make sense if you couldn't afford one I suppose

This wasn't a real thing until companies convinced you it was. People have been sleeping just fine on the floor, cots, and poverty mattresses for centuries.

Just lay down on the bed and go to sleep.
