Like others have said - its mostly luck where you were born and to whom. I was lucky to be adopted and not have to live in an orphanage. I thank my parents for adopting me, but that was luck too - had I been born a month or two earlier, I may not have been adopted.
I know I was lucky and it had nothing to do with some higher power. My gratitude is also shown by trying to help others who didn't get so lucky. My wife and I volunteer at the food pantry, homeless shelter, and other places where we can make a difference locally. We first started to show our kids how we all need to give back, but then we realized it actually made us feel better. Giving is better than receiving - usually. Ha.

quote:Pretty good answer and basically how I feel. It’s actually made me much more appreciative of my life when I don’t think that there is something deciding whether or not to bless me with good things or moments.
Perhaps it's because you feel that there is no one or nothing responsible for it that makes you appreciate it more. Perhaps it's the absence of guilt. Maybe it's not having something hanging over your head that's threatening to punish you for eternity. I try not to get hung up on whom to direct my appreciation or the why. I just enjoy the great stuff while it's here because sometimes it's not.

I am impressed by the firm and unassailable faith of atheists who so vehemently argue against God's existence, even when some of them too are filled with gratitude for this world. If Christians had such faith, the Kingdom would indeed be neigh.

And it made me wonder; do people without a belief in a Higher Power ever feel gratitutde? If so, to what do they attribute their blessings?
Yes, and I believe that I create my own blessings, with the help of loved ones. I don't know where a higher power comes in to that equation.

I just feel gratitude towards the "universe" or "HP". I use those interchangeably.
I don't understand how things works, not do I care to. If I understood my higher power, it wouldn't be a higher power. I just have faith if I do the right things, shits gonna work out, and when it does, I feel gratitude.

No, that's beautiful. We are here for a short time to love another, and then we are gone.
It makes every second spent with loved ones infinitely more important. An after life just makes existince on Earth pointless

You genuinely sound stupid. I can be grateful for everything without joining your cult

Lsd will make you spiritual, but that does not mean religious. Religion kills spirituality and replaces it with unfounded beliefs

Wow. Didnt expect all of the downvotes.
Not that I care. A lot more belligerence and pride than I anticipated.

A lot of people don't like to think. They just want to see boobies. I wouldn't let it get you down.

Spoken like a true Christian, brother. Keep the faith. Keep casting stones. At least I don’t judge people in the name of some being that may or may not exist. I like to keep things here on earth.
Pray for me next time you’re lighting candles, please. Godspeed.

I say this with complete and total sincerity:
anyone who doesn't believe in a higher power should try LSD just once in their life.
I've never felt closer to, "god" - or whatever our creator is or isn't - than when I was tripping my arse of on acid.
seriously that shite will make you emotional, in a good way.
Sorry sir, but I must kindly disagree after consuming well over 1000 doses of LSD, psilocybin, peyote, mescalin and other psychedelics in my day, there are not many things I am more certain of than the lack of existence of a higher power. A psychoactive drug acts primarily upon the central nervous system where it alters brain function, resulting in temporary changes in perception, mood, consciousness and behavior. People will feel and experience things they are already predisposed to feeling and experiencing. But glad you had a good time

completely normal healthy children,

Thank your ancestors for moving here. There are plenty of people (both believers and nonbelievers) who live in shithole countries.

Well, I feel lucky that the stars aligned in such a way that I am a sentient being living in a time with great freedom and access to a lot of cool toys and interesting information. However, I don't believe God has anything more to do with that than when I drive across town and encounter nothing but green lights. Significant or trivial, it's still just luck and I don't see a reason to think there's a deity behind any of it.
I also give myself a lot of credit because if I didn't get up off my arse every day and go to work I wouldn't be able to enjoy any of the things I have and experience. I don't recall God ever clocking in for me at work or going to the grocery store and paying for the food I eat.
If you must be grateful to someone or something, it should be the people who have supported you through the years. The people you can see, interact with, love and enjoy. Don't waste your time being grateful toward a being with no discernible existence that you almost certainly wouldn't believe in if you had simply been born in a different region of the world.

Are you asking this question wondering how your God would allow this?
