Is it difficult to get in-state tuition after freshman yr?

Curious as I have some family and friends that will attend college out of state.
Is it possible to pay in-state tuition after living there for a yr or two?

Where?
ETA: Each state has different qualifications for residency for tuition purposes. In places like Oregon, you can get it in 3 months. In most places, it's usually a year, and you have to meet the guidelines for meeting permanent residency - ie changing license, plates, permanent address, etc.,

Obviously depends on where.
It used to be that if you got a job and established residency, that would get you in state tuition. Now I’m not so sure.
Many colleges wave out of state with a high ACT score.

Also, in some states living in the dorm does not change residency.

No. Once you've enrolled as an out-of-state student, you'll not be considered an in-state student for purposes of the university.

That can change but it's not as simple as, "oh I've lived on campus for a year."
You can pretty much google the necessary prerequisites for residency for any state.

It's not something to bet on. I fought and lost that battle long ago as an out-of-state undergrad.

It's probably better, financially speaking, to take a year off to work and live in the state that contains the university you're trying to attend.

Exactly. You have to meet a certain income threshold. Basically, the university ascertains whether or not you're financially supporting yourself as a state resident or just trying to become a state resident for tuition purposes.
As mentioned, though, once that "out of state" goes on your record, you can pretty well hang it up.

Most schools, or at least most decent schools, require you to live in the state for 12 months and not be enrolled at their school.
Meaning you can't pay out of state year 1 while you establish residency then pay in state. That is flat out retarded, then every single out of state student could cut their tuition in half after freshman year.
The work around is to take classes at a community community college or just work for your first year. Then apply for in state.

I guess they're SOL. It's Pharmacy school in Alabama and Georgia.
