I know some pools have an almost sandpaper bottom; is that gunnite?

It can be either.

It's pretty simple to tell gunite from vinyl.

I find its kind of rough if I rub my bottom on it.

Texture is often added to gunite for better traction.

So most pools are either vinyl or gunnite?

What are the pros and cons of having gunnite?

Vinyl looks like shite and is cheap. Gunnite looks great, easy to clean and lasts longer. I mean you're talking about plastic vs a concrete finish.

can be smooth or rough depending on the surface type put ON TO the gunite. Could be smooth plaster, rougher pebbletec or similar

Only real advantage to vinyl is the initial cost of building a pool.

We're going to look at a house here in a few minutes that has one. Didn't think we were ready, but this house would be a dream house scenario so we're checking it out.
