I was building the Caribbean Beach Resort. For three years. We had contractor passes. Daughter and friends loved every minute. Did not spend a dime. Even parking was paid. Foreman and I decided to eat lunch at every restaurant. Got that covered too. Sued the bastards for seven million and won.

What the hell you spending $2k on if you don't have to pay to get in the parks
Our VRBO for 4 nights is about $700.(That's easily 1/3 of what most people pay to stay on site).
Gas in The Rav 4 is about $150 conservatively (1400 miles at 33 mpg and $2.89/gal. Gas is higher in Florida than here. Weird)
Park hopper parking is $40/day x 3 = $120 (we don't get this for free).
A fancy dinner with Cinderella or Beast runs about $385 for 4 people.(we don't even order booze. It's the $35 fancy goblets for kids that get you).
If you find a way to spend less than the remaining $645 on food, Disney Ears, and other random shite on 4 people for 4 days.... let me know.

So when their son, Lincoln, was born in 2020, Ms. Leach wanted his first visit to the park to be special and spared no expense in planning it. She booked a two-week trip to visit Florida in December 2022, which included stays at Disney World and Universal Studios.
The costs quickly accumulated. Ms. Leach and her family traveled from New Haven, Conn., and paid extra for admission to “Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party,” an after-hours event that cost about $200 per person. She also shelled out $100 for the theme park’s photo service so she could download photos of the family that photographers took during the visit.
The vacation cost around $6,000, which included accommodations, tickets and a car rental, and which Ms. Leach charged to her Disney-branded credit card.
quote:
Ms. Leach is one of many parents who have taken on debt for a Disney family vacation. In June, LendingTree, a financial firm, published the results of a survey of over 2,000 people that found that 45 percent of parents with children under 18 who have gone to Disney went into debt for the trip.
quote:
But Ms. Leach, 38, who works in sales, relies on quarterly bonuses to cover vacation costs. She and her husband earn about $250,000 annually, combined, though that figure can fluctuate each year. Her family doesn’t always have the money to pay for vacations upfront. Instead, she books first, then pays off her balances as the bonuses come in.
If you are going into debt to take a Disney vacation and paying it off "through annual bonuses", then no you really can't afford it.

You better work on your "no" skills if you still need $20k for 3 days at Disney

This story is like Viagra for a guy that took his family to WDW 6 times.

Do you think I'm the money police or something? No, I can't stop you from spending $10k on a Disney vacation but that doesn't stop me from calling you an absolute dumbass for doing it as MOST Americans can't afford that.
Did I touch a nerve there, buddy? Max out that credit card for the Character Breakfast?

Sounds like they afford it just fine. It's not like the balance of the trip is sitting on a high interest card they're only making min payments on. You're kinda reaching with this one unless you know more about this situation that what you quoted.
Disney also only requires a $200 deposit on reservations and you pay off the balance around 2 months from arrival, so the whole story is a little suspect.

Yea, you're trying way too hard now.

If she's not paying except for when she gets her quarterly bonuses, that means there are at least 3 months in each quarter that she's carrying that balance. So 3 months worth of high interest accruing.
Now, we assume she gets a big enough bonus that she's paying that off in one quarter. If she doesn't, she's carrying that for at least 8 months.
And in a country where credit card debt continues to climb sky high and the quoted trip was for a 2 year old kid, I'm going to guess that's not the only thing they're carrying on credit.

Disney card gives you 6 months to pay off reservations, so no

Again, you're making assumptions to sit on your high horse. Just a weird take in a thread about $40k for 3 days at Disney

Alright, so she gets a break on the interest for 6 months. What if it extends beyond that?
Also, are we just completely ignoring they're spending on high dollar Disney experiences for a 2 year old? Gives a solid glimpse into that FOMO mentality that will only get worse and more expensive.

If my "high horse" is having some fiscal responsibility when it comes to vacations and the like, I guess I'll ride off into the sunset. Without my debt.
ETA: Actually I just looked it up. On a Disney Visa it's 18-27% interest after the 6 month period. Better hope that first quarter bonus is a good one.

Put a bullet in me if I ever spend that much money to go to a fricked up place like that. They would probably have to pay me $10k.
