Haven't read the thread beyond the OP, but they've done this to me before. I thought I got lucky and that there was no way they'd notice it amongst tens of millions of returns, but they sure did a couple weeks later.
They took the amount right back out of my account like it was never there - one minute it was there, and the next time I checked it a few hours later it was gone without notice.
I kicked myself for not immediately withdrawing it in cash and hiding it somewhere in my house, if I had the chance all over again I'd pull every dollar out of that account in cash and sit on it for a while.
Then I'd open a new account elsewhere, assuming the amount is worth all the trouble. Mine was like $2500 extra if I remember correctly

Unironically this, no somebody else mentioned their loan shark fees..

when they come for it you will be charged 11% daily fee for every day you kept it. they have higher interest rates then loan sharks and you have zero choice but to pay the insane penalty rates even though it was their mistake. i had an $800 mistake and a year later they added $1200 in penalties and i had 5 days to pay or they start adding 11% daily interest to it
That’s fricked UP!
This is how mass-shooters are born.

I would write a letter explaining the situation to them informing and send it certified to your local IRS office, at that point you have a paper trail to show that you tried to correct their mistake. It may take forever, but at least you have proof that you tried to contact them.
this. send it certified mail with return receipt. Send a follow up. At this point you have put them on notice of their frick up. Id also include a record of every interaction you have taken in furtherance of solving this. If you are going to wait this out and see if it stays there, then this is a way to try to protect yourself down the road.
