Intuit (TurboTax) data breach - I got a letter from the IRS

Yesterday, I received a letter from the IRS stating that my 2018 tax returns had been filed twice.
I called the IRS identity fraud line and got an investigator/analyst who was fantastic. She walked through a very stringent process of verification and we got down to investigating.
It turns out that someone had mailed a second paper tax return in June of this year. They only made very slight changes to our income, but our employer and dependent information is the same. We e-filed the original claim with TurboTax in April.
The investigator said that ID thieves hardly ever file paper returns and that the second return would actually result in a very small liability ($300 or so), but that she has no explanation other than potential identity theft. Also, any potential refund would have been a paper check mailed to my address.
A Google search yields conflicting information as to a potential Intuit data breach. Intuit denies a breach occurred.
I have frozen my credit reports just in case.
Has anyone else dealt with a similar issue?

IRS also had a major data breach through their get transcript program.

Happened to me a few years back, I filed a police report with my local department for record purposes. It took the IRS 8 months to verify the fraud and for me to receive my refund. Now, every year, I have a specific PIN number provided to me from the IRS when filing any returns, this protects me from any further fraud.

How do you know the leter wasn’t a favor and the number they gave u and investigator you were talking to wasn’t all fake. They just got all your information when they asked you all those questions.

Hopefully he googled the number prior to dialing. But letters in the mail are just about the only way the IRS will contact you

Hope this helps you feel secure.

Nothing is 100%. But it’s definitely added security. A return cannot be filed without this specific PIN, and it changes every year.

Because I pulled it from irs.gov.

Wished you well. I use mail with a return receipt for security. I don't trust the internet with filing. I'm sure this sounds old fashioned with some.

I also am sent a PIN ever year by the IRS due to a prior fake filing in 2014.
