The same reason they trained these slaves how to fight. Bc it was big business and winning gladiators made money for the owner. Fighters would seemingly need the protein so this study surprises me.

It is suprising but you can get plenty of protein from a vegetarian diet though.

Are you working on the next greatest American novel?
All that starving has you a bit chippy.

why did this even need to be studied? does this help modern armies better feed the troops by knowing what gladiators ate 2000 years ago?
Well it was Vienna and Switzerland that did the studies. They have to do something with the foreign aid we give them.

Throughout history and to this day in the third world, basic grains and cereals were the staple. Meat was a delicacy for the rich.

These people were slaves. They dont get meat when its very hard to come by, perserve etc.
Keep in mind even in the 1500's the average englishman got 9 lbs of meat a YEAR.

Slaves get fed like slaves.
However, I bet the best Gladiators were fed top-notch meals by their owners, so they could kick arse with regularity.

I don't understand how this is news. That was the diet for most Romans: grains, bread, fruit, whatever vegetable was available, some birds, some fish, and they didn't eat cows.
Not exactly ground breaking shite here.

Gladiators were the athletes of the day and meat is protein. So even though beans have protein I'm still surprised meat wasn't a part of the diet. Athletes today are rarely vegan. Templar knights ate meat, unlike nonfighting monks bc it was thought the meat gave strength.

The only reason you started this thread was to say
Why do you feel the need to always point out that you semi workout? You come off as really insecure.

Actually they are large amounts of grain and legumes but not for the reasons most are saying on here., this diet provided for a fat layer increase to allow the gladiators to absorb blows and have a fatty cushion.
Secondly. A large number of gladiators were not slaves. Imagine the mma but with potential death more common. It was not uncommon for a person to sign up to be a gladiator and fight for an "owner" with the oppertunity for a better life after a set number of fights.
Really not much different from professional sports today except likely less domestic abuse and tattoos
ETA: Terd would still have been a fatass anyway

It's not like they could go pull a pack of ribs out of a freezer.

well were they not basically slaves?
They were the sports celebrities of their day. Most of them never died and on first blood the match was over. I know disappointing :(

Their bread was full of protein. There is a bread vendor in Los Angeles that sells the sourdough type bread that he claims was the same bread stapled out to the Roman Army. He also claims that the grains used were much different than the ones we have today. He is an interesting guy FWIW LINK

Well I figured they'd be fed on fois Gras and filet mignon.
