The driver did mention something about people not wanting to buy cars (presumably to drive for Uber) because of Uber's low rates. Maybe his supposed $97k loss was his investment in the car which he expected to make back driving for Uber but now apparently can't because the rates are lower. That's about the best guess I have on what he meant by that. At least he still has the car, so he could recoup some of his loss by selling it, I would assume.

I don't think you guys are grasping what is going on here....that guy didn't lose $97K driving that one car. He owns a car service and has several black SUVs that are likely running both contract and Uber services.
Not enough information to know who cause the $97K loss (likely on driver/owner).
Uber isn't just your random Joe driving a car. Car services have latched on and it's almost exclusive with Uber black. Now, they chose to latch on to the business model and lost pricing power in doing so. They likely would have lost it anyway with Uber moving into the luxury/black car service, but they probably accelerated it by joining the fray.
