While the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. The Board of Education ruled segregation in schools unconstitutional, white Americans in several Southern states stood firmly against integration. In Arkansas the battle played out in the national eye. In 1957, nine African American students attempted to begin the school year at Central High School in Little Rock. The “Little Rock Nine” as they would become known, faced vicious racist protests. Images of the brave young students became iconic in the annals of civil rights history. After President Kennedy was shot on Nov. 22, 1963, Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in aboard Air Force One. The inauguration marked the first time a woman administered the oath of office, and the only time a president has taken the oath on an airplane. The 36th president can be seen in this image by White House photographer Cecil Stoughton alongside Jacqueline Kennedy, Lady Bird Johnson, and others.
