If any of this is at all important to her, run, don't walk, away from the relationship.

I wear my wedding ring every single day, and it is one of my most cherished worldly possessions, but it's because of the man who gave it to me, not its market value or how expensive it was.

Rest assured, your girl will want to see the papers on the ring at some point. And then the ruse will be discovered.

The gemologists description is just an opinion. A certificate is just a laminated opinion.

If the diamond is unmounted (loose), ask what the return policy is. If allowed you could send it to GIA or AGS and have it certified. That way you would know it is what the seller represents it to be.

The only 2 companies that are consistent in their gradings are the two above. EGL, UGL, IGI and all the others are pretty much worthless.

If you are buying from a reputable dealer and the diamond is well cut, attractive and has brilliance that should be what you are looking for. Dont get caught up in the technical things. I assume it is to be an engagement ring, and as such is a symbol of your love.

ETA: For the downvoters I will make a couple of more comments. When I say the gemogolist that term is used in the jewelry industry to describe someone who has knowledge of gemstones. However there are no legal qualifications or schooling that someone has to have. Any Tom Dick or Harry can call them selves a gemogolist. If you want a truly knowledgeable person go to here:

https://www.americangemsociety.org/search/custom.asp?id=4674

and look for either a Registered Jeweler (RJ) or a Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA). These individuals must past coursework and be tested each year. Their opinion carries more weight than just some guy in the mall who gives his opinion. In addition to the knowledge that they must adhere to there is also an ethics portion that requires the person to be truthful in their business dealings. I know for a fact that there are people who misrepresent diamonds and take advantage of people. It matters who did the appraisal and what their background is.

I don't know, but I asked my wife if it was time to get her a big fancy stone and she said she'd rather me dig a basement.

I guess it matters to you now, but it's really not all that important in the grand scheme.

Just get her a ring and not worry about all that silly shite. A diamond isn't rare, it's all BS. De Beers pulled one of the greatest cons known to man with the "diamonds are forever" campaign. Here is a write up that touches on it.

Not that it helps you here but I remember ring shopping a LONG time ago and the jeweler broke it down for me like this when I asked the meaning of VVS, VS, SI etc

He said, “S- is for spensive, VS- is for very spensive and VVS- means either very very spensive or pick a different woman to marry.”

If you’re looking for a deal just keep in mind that the markup on diamond rings is absolutely ridiculous. Compare to Blue Nile and ring shop. I did my research and the asking price for my wife’s ring was $16,000ish. I paid $7600 after negotiations.

Find a diamond broker and go look at some in person to see how everything balances cut/clarity/color wise.

A good portion of my family are watchmakers and half say certs don’t matter unless you’re reselling it, the other half won’t touch uncertified diamonds. As long as you know it’s a real diamond how it shows to your fiancé is really what matters.

That being said; if you’re going to insure it, you’ll need to get it appraised and a certified diamond will appraised for much more than a random uncertified diamond.

What the OT should really be discussing is this idea, created by the people selling the product, that men should be spending two to three months salary on a ring. That is ludicrous on its face.
