I had a lady complain to me that my restaurant had reduced the options/choices on the free meal for Veterans Day…she threatened to go some place else for her free meal…

This. Just when you’re about to say “frick it all” someone will come along that is over and beyond grateful. Then the whole process starts again

I’ve learned through doing charity work, there are a lot of ungrateful people out there, but the few who do show gratitude tend to make it worthwhile.

I once helped deliver food boxes to poor folks. Each box had a variety of canned goods, TP, dried beans, coffee, etc.

Most folks were extremely grateful. But one house had an older lady and her adult daughter. They welcomed me in. Daughter pawed through the box, glared at me and asked where the other ___ was. "There is usually two of them." I said I had no idea; I was just helping make deliveries. She started shaking her head and muttering like I ripped her off. The mom did seem embarrassed that daughter was such a bitch.

Like you say, the ones who show gratitude make it worthwhile. My last stop was an old lady who had the worst house on the route. She didn't even look to see what was in the box. She had me come sit and visit for a while, and she expressed her thanks over and over. That was the most memorable stop of the day.

Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

There is also a heavy dose of a lack of self awareness running through society today.
