Me too, especially given how long it takes to get your chops back after time off.
I suggest signing up at tromboneforum.org. Not a super-active community, but the ones who do post there are helpful, many of them professionals and specialists. You've had more music education than I have, so it may not be of as much use to you.

guitar will be the easiest and cheapest, you can find good used guitars everywhere, eBay, reverb, Craigslist, pawnshops, music stores. There are a ton of lessons and YouTube and the web. Justin Guitar is an amazing one and it's completely free. Learn a few chords and you can play the majority of songs that have ever been written.
if you do decide on guitar you can start with an electric or acoustic whatever your preference, you don't have to start on acoustic
also, don't overlook the bass guitar, if you have aspirations to play with any groups, guitar players are a dime a dozen, bass not so much
