I had two great uncles who were there. One was a tail gunner on a B-24 in Europe. Caught flak, got medals, bombed the shite out of the Krauts.
The other was a Marine in the Pacific. He didn't talk about his time much.
Mrs Cove's Pow Pow retired a full Col after serving in the Army in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. His brother was one of Merrill's Marauders in Burma. That dude had some crazy arse stories.
I'm glad I got to know all of them.
Same here. Had one great uncle that was a SeaBee in the Pacific, another that served on a carrier in the Pacific (don't remember which one, just remember being very young and him telling me about the planes coming in to land). Had another great uncle that was a combat engineer in Europe and my grandfather was a tanker in Europe as well. Sadly, my grandfather died before I was born so other than his unit (4th Armor Div) I really don't know much about about what all he did over there.

He passed when I was 3, so I don't know much about his service. I believe he was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, he had a purple heart. I know (or at least I was told) that he didn't see action until after D-Day.
Well, both the 17th and the 82nd saw action at the Bulge. But the 82nd took part in D-Day whereas the 17th didn't enter action until later. But the fact that he didn't see action until after D-Day does not mean he had to be in the 17th. He could have been assigned to the 82nd after D-Day as a replacement.

The 17th badge looks familiar... that's probably who he was with.

People from the south celebrate their heritage. We have a strong sense of pride about where we come from and who we are.
Not if you live in New Orleans.

Cool story. I was station there back in the 1970's. Cool island too! One could still see the bunkers built in the hill sides along the coast.

My patient said when the Confederate flag was raised, the marines from the south cheered, the marines from the north booed, and the marines from the west didn't know what to do.
That is a pretty damn cool anecdote.

It is sad times in America when brainwashed people want to ban American history.
