It's both. I always can be both. Teaching about God is always a good thing.
Apparently you prefer to be a jerkoff simplistic buttoned down christian.... a Puritan? A Quaker? A Presbo?

It annoys me that the birth of our Lord and Savior would be bottled into one day. The day that was a compromise to those celebrating Saturnalia - a drunken-orgy fest. The attempt to somehow tie in the birth of Christ and Santa Claus??? Help me! People go into debt and stress buying stuff that in many, many cases the receiver doesn't like. It's stupid. If you're THAT gone with the gift giving and breathe by watching your kids open presents then make it about that and leave the birth of Christ alone. Jesus wasn't born anywhere near this time of year anyway.

I don't need a date
It's a daily appreciation and thanksgiving
Who said that a date to celebrate the birth of Jesus was a stumbling block for ME?
The Church celebrates many aspects of the life, death and resurrection of Our Lord. It places the celebrations on the yearly calendar to make sure that the whole mystery and Good News is fully taught and passed on.
The Feast of Christ the King ends the liturgical year. Advent starts the new year. There are many many feast days between the two.
The fact that the world celebrates the joy of love and giving, even if they don’t recognize that God is the source of all love, and that he showed his love in the profound and extraordinary way of sending his Son, God made flesh, to live among us, is simply a testament to the unbounding love of God that flows like a fountain, from the heart of Jesus unto the whole world. It’s our opportunity to evangelize and preach the Good News.

I'm with you, Bayou.
A number of attempts have been made to pinpoint Jesus's birth. One scholar, using an unusual triple conjunction as a basis, came up with September 11, 3BC. 9/11? That creeper me out.

I should add my feelings about Christmas are mixed. I hate it for the reasons you list, but I do appreciate that most of the world acknowledges Jesus, whether or not they trust him for salvation.
Fact is, Jesus's resurrection should be the most important Christian recognition. (Don't use the word "Easter" around me!).
