How to remove the coating on "black iron pipe"?

Anyone know how to remove the black coating (paint? tar? something else?) on "black iron pipe" that is sold at Lowes/Home Depot?
I'd rather not grind/sand it off. Some type of solvent would be preferable so as to not affect the steel underneath.

that is typically just some type of varnish to keep it from rusting...why do you want to remove it"....

Pickling is the proper way to do it.

Try muriatic acid
Eh, it could work, but if it is a petroleum based paint he will have better luck with a benzene based solvent.

Just bring it somewhere to get it sandblasted. Much easier than chemical strippers.

Buy a gallon of MEK. methyl-ethyl-ketone. I sell cutback coatings to the pipe fitting industry. Different types of solvents will soften up and clean the pipe but the fastest way is just soak it n the MEK which you can buy locally at a paint store.

You won't need a wire brush. Typically MEK will attack the asphalt pretty quick. The pipe coating generally only has about 1 mil of paint so within just a couple of minutes it should wash off. Dip it several times to ensure all contaminants are removed. You will not need to do any additional cleaning after this. Just allow the MEK to evaporate.

Why wouldn't you just go and buy some schedule 40 pipe un coated bro??? Any steel yard will have both that and structural pipe uncoated, cheaper too.

You must have missed the part where I said I want the look of the natural steel/iron?

You are not going to have the "look of natural steel pipe" if you buy varnished plumbers pipe and then use any chemical to then remove the varnish.
for what you want you need to do as mentioned above and buy some plain schedule 10 or schedule 40 pipe and let it patina naturally.
That stripped varnished pipe is gonna look like crap

It's not gonna look like the pipe that lowes/home depot sells in 1"-10" lengths that are in plastic bags to keep from rusting?

Hard to tell, depends on the makeup of the metal
