I personally prefer needles, but you will be doing 2-3x as often.
Btw, one thing being neglected her is what is the exposed space in these beds. For instance, first year I did mine it probably took 30 bales. By the last year I was down to about 12-15. Everything growing in really cuts down on the mulch.

If the mulch is 3" deep you'll need 24.44 bags.

I always just eyeball it. Walk the bed and say, that's a bag (or bale of pine straw), that's a bag, that's a bag....
Then, I add a couple. Been doing it that way forever.
