Lol I’ve been hooked up with some great resources thanks to this thread but I ultimately want to see it to go to a good home.

So glad it’s not gonna be a fire pit!

My house is very old, made of local cypress. The family was involved with the sugar and lumber industry.

Damn I got one about that size but deeper that came out of my family’s old candy company but it’s solid thick wall copper. I worry about it getting stolen for scrap but hearing what a cast iron one may be worth I may need to move it inside.

I didn’t read this thread all the way through but cast iron is very brittle…I would suspect building a fire in a sugar kettle would crack it.

That’s a real one. I grew up on a sugar cane farm. My father his father, and his father all worked the farm. The helped to establish the St. Mary Parish CO-OP. This cooperative of local farmers all had these kettles. We had 4 or 5 different kettles. They bring back fond memories. As kids my brothers and I used to chase each other around them. Don’t sell this. Keep it in your family. Thank you for bringing the topic and yes I’m glad your husband didn’t destroy this piece of Louisiana history.

Our home was solid cypress as well along the bayou. You have a piece of Louisiana treasure, enjoy it.

First thing is to remove all of that junk out of it.

Second, soak it in hog lard.

Third, blacken that pot and make a jambalaya

I'd turn the one in the backyard upside down and place on top of the one in front. Instant UFO!

Never gonna happen. These things are incredibly heavy. I picked one up for $1000 and needed 6 guys to move it....and that ain't picking it off the ground.

That’s the price for the manufactured ones. My research is that these authentic old ones are worth quite a bit.

They were built to have fire under them with a rotating roller i side to crush the cane, then cook the sugar out. Fire won't hurt it or so I wouldn't think.
