What kind of horse? What are you going to do with it? Where are you going to keep it? Do you have a trailer to haul it? Do you have any tack? Are you going to feed it or pasture it? Both? $90 for annual Coggins test. Don’t forget West Nile and EVT vaccines. Tube worming or paste wormers?

Establish a relationship with an equine vet so you aren’t in a bind when the inevitable after- hours emergency pops up.

Real talk: hay runs $6-$10/bale. Alfalfa around $20/ bale for two string alfalfa. Assume 1-2 bales of hay/ week, 1-2 bales alfalfa/biweekly. Bagged feed around $10-$15/ bag. Assume 1 bag every two weeks for an easy keeper. More if they eat a lot.

You can adopt a Mustang for free to very little. You can buy a levee pony for next to nothing with a little work. You can adopt a TB or PMU mare for little to nothing. Nicer/ better bred horses and horse with a purpose cost more.

You can also get screwed paying a lot for a shitty horse.

Do your homework and take your time. It can be a rewarding experience. It can also be a money pit. I’ve had both.

Get a cow instead.

When you get tired of it, you can have a bad arse BBQ.

Yeah, I won’t tell him about having to cut a hole in my fence to drag my old gelding out after putting him down on Ash Wednesday.

There are all kinds of fun aspects to horse ownership you just have to experience to appreciate.

Dig a hole, put the horse in it, cover the hole.

None of this by hand

Thanks Aspy. He was 29 years old. I’d had him since ‘97. He was a good horse. I will miss him.

Bury it with a backhoe or load it on a trailer and haul it to the Vet school for disposal like I did.

I’d have buried him here, but it’s too wet to try and dig a hole right now.

Some people pile tires on them and burn the carcass . But that seldom works as planned.
