My wife grandfather owns an agency. One of his sons works at said agency under him. He is an agent.
is your wife's grandfather appointed by said insurance co or is the son?
The son works for the agent, therfor he's a producer.

Not exactly true. I retired at 40 yrs old and never had more than 2 (usually just one) licensed agents working for me.

Agh yes plant operators making that 100k plus a year and working 70 hrs a week.
If the operator is working 70 hours a week, he's pulling in waaaaaaaayyyyyyy over 100K. Normal schedule here is 48 hrs one week, 36 the next and they make almost 90K with no overtime.

all day long, an insurance producer is an insurance agent.
I dont agree with that....if
An insurance agent is an individual appointed to represent a particular insurance company.
An insurance producer is a general term applied to anyone who engages in the sale of insurance products.

yall are arguing a moot point
there are owners and producers who work at an agency, among other employees (CSRs, assistants, bookkeeper, etc)
a producer can also be known as an agent. he can also be known as an account executive or account manager.
so can a CSR. it varies agency to agency.
to answer the OP. being a producer/agent can be very lucrative, however the failure rate is extremely high because you are selling an inanimate object to a customer base that mostly hates dealing with it or isn't educated on it. can make it very difficult.
also most agencies as a business don't make HUGE profits from the initial selling of insurance, it's mostly on the back end from profit sharing, etc.

eta: however the interesting thing about the industry is it can be tailored around your interest. you like offshore stuff, then call on offshore people. you like horses, then call horse places. etc etc. it doesn't have to be boring, in fact it can be very much the opposite.

The one that I know IRL makes a base salary of $95K, with an end of year bonus at $40k. 15 yrs experience.

Agency owners make as much as doctors without the student loans. Agency licensed staff make $40k to $100k plus. It really depends on the market and average premiums.
