Yea they are great for docs because:
1) you don't want people having your actual cell phone number
2) they can be passed to the next person on shift
3) they get signals in hospitals, where a lot of cell phones don't.
I guess the only alternative would be a cell phone, but a hospital isn't gonna pay for that when the pagers do all you need them too when there are phones all over a hospital to use.

A year ago I did. They didn't pay for a cellphone, but we were on call, 24/7.
I always had a dead battery when they called

The Twin Peaks in Metairie uses pagers to notify people waiting for tables.

Back in the day, voice pagers were awesome. You'd get that persons pager #, call it when they start to drive away, leave a voice message that's not clear, watch that person turn around and come back into your place of biz and try and figure out who paged him. Repeat process when he leaves.

My wife does but will turn it in at the end of the month. Surgery residency is over
. There will be no pager for her fellowship.

This. I pack a pager and a business cell when I am on duty, in addition to my personal cell.
