Buying 2nd 16yr old a Tahoe or Silverado....oldest one destroyed one with 50k miles that was expensive... looking at spending 10-14k on 150k miles truck and hoping he can make it last through college...what is most mileage vehicle you would buy?

As long as you personally make sure the maintenance is done on the car, go and spend $5-10k on a used Toyota or Honda with 100k plus. They can get another 5-10 years out of it if they don't total it which is more than likely

Depends on the vehicle and the documented maintenance and repairs.

My daughter in college and drives a 2007 Lexus. I am the original owners, and was religious about maintenance and repairs.

If you are going to get a high mileage vehicle it should be 1 owner with all records and certified by the dealer if they are selling it.

First car was a thirteen year old toyota corolla with 130k miles.

Kids don't need anything fancy- 4 wheels, an engine that starts, and a seatbelt .

I would say it depends on a few factors...

1. How willing & able are you to do repairs?
2. How likely is your kid to wreck it?
3. How many more miles will they put on it?

Get a Toyota. Pains me to say it, after working for GM for 30+ years. If you can get an FJ Cruiser do it. Bought on for my daughter, best decision I could have made. She inadvertently pulled out in front of a speeding Escalade, who was hidden behind another vehicle. Took a hit in the drivers door at 45+ mph. Flipped the FJ on its side. She didn’t get much more than a small bruise. I immediately went and bought another FJ.

Hard to generalize.

I'm of the opinion that you can judge the overall condition of a vehicle by looking at whether or not all the accessories still work. Cosmetic condition can be informative, too.

If some guy tells you, "yeah, it's great transportation, the air conditioner / stereo / cruise control / power windows / whatever just crapped out and it's not worth fixing," then you should run.

Are you worried about the price?

Because the insurance on the kid will be much worse than the note on a reliable lower mileage vehicle

I'd keep it under 180k, that's what my first car was and I drove it until it broke down around 208k

No one really needs anything fancy by your logic.

1. I'm handy, can fix most things and do...replaced HID bulbs on wife's range Rover and trailer sensor break gauge on older son's Silverado today

2. He is 16, so odds are high

3. Hoping less than 60k
